Water intoxication during carbamazepine treatment.
نویسنده
چکیده
Carbamazepine has recently been shown to have a vasopressin-like action and, like chlorpropamnide, to be effective in controlling polyuria in patients with diabetes insipidus (Hartman, 1972; Uhlich et al., 1972). In the case reported here carbamazepine, which was being given to a patient suffering from depression and psychogenic polydipsia, induced inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone and water intoxication.

Reversal by phenytoin of carbamazepine-induced water intoxication: a pharmacokinetic interaction.
The hypothesis that phenytoin may antagonise the antidiuretic effect of carbamazepine has been examined by comparing the free water clearance response to a standard water load in 36 patients stabilised on different drug regimes. The diuretic response to the water load was significantly greater in patients receiving chronic treatment with carbamazepine and phenytoin in combination than in matche...

carbamazepine are very similar to the clinical features of water intoxication. Dizziness, headaches, nausea, and mental confusion may occur with both, although it is not known what proportion of patients who develop these side effects on carbamazepine do so because of a fall in the plasma osmolality. When untoward symptoms develop during treatment and subside after the dose is reduced the mecha...
متن کاملEvidence for a direct adverse reaction of neuroleptics in self-induced water intoxication of psychiatric patients.
A mentally retarded patient who developed polydipsia and hyponatremia following the long-term use of neuroleptics is described. Before the investigation, he was treated with a combination of five drugs: diazepam, propericiazine, carbamazepine, lithium carbonate and trihexyphenidyl. The treatment was switched to diazepam alone; to propericiazine, trihexyphenidyl and diazepam; to carbamazepine an...
متن کاملWater intoxication in epileptic patients receiving carbamazepine.
Plasma sodium and osmolality were determined in 80 adult epileptic patients receiving chronic treatment with carbamazepine and in 50 control patients treated with other anticonvulsant drugs. Mean plasma osmolality was significantly lower in the carbamazepine-treated patients but mean plasma sodium did not differ in the two groups. Hyponatraemia was found in five of the carbamazine-treated patie...
متن کاملHigh-flux haemodialysis treatment as treatment for carbamazepine intoxication.
Acute severe intoxication with carbamazepine is associated with seizures, coma and respiratory depression. Traditionally, charcoal haemoperfusion is used to remove the drug. We present a case of carbamazepine intoxication, successfully treated with three hours of high-flux haemodialysis. Thus, haemodialysis using high-flux membranes is a feasible and effective therapeutic option for carbamazepi...
